Frank Horvat (Abbazia, Italy, 1928) is an eminent photographer who became established in the 1950s and 60s in fashion photography, helping to popularise the genre by working with many magazines which aimed to breathe new life into the sector, applying techniques and approaches commonly found in photojournalism. Displaying a profoundly humanistic vein and vast technological knowhow, his output is as heterodox as it is unclassifiable. He has explored various photographic registers such as portraiture, documentary, landscape and urban photography. Relentless in his search for motifs, Horvat is not enslaved by any school or technique, and with a career that has led him to reside in Italy, Switzerland, India, England, France and the United States, he has embraced multiple identities and immersed himself in a vast array of styles and situations with many specialisations and periods.
This show, conceived and organised by Antoni Vila Casas and Frank Horvat, is a tribute to his 90 years. It is a selection of over 80 carefully chosen photographs showing Horvat as unquenchable, unpredictable and persistent as life itself; a Horvat who maintains, at first reading somewhat paradoxically, that photography “is the art of not pushing the button”.
